Christmas Spirit

Christmas is just around the corner, is everyone in the spirit? It's time to get
the decorations out and make your house ready for celebrations, fun and joy.

In Europe the Christmas period lasts for almost over   a month, the celebrations begin from the Advent   which is four Sundays before Christmas Eve and  goes on till 6th January so all the holy festive can take place. On 6th December St. Nicolas is celebrated, which is the feast day of December.

Czech Republic, Germany and Austria are 3 countries which celebrate Christmas to it’s fullest.

In Czech Republic, Christmas markets are open from early November till early January. In Prague, the Christmas tree is put up in Old Town,on 30th November and from this day on wards, Christmas celebrations begin!!! The Christmas market consists of wooden huts, which are beautifully decorated and lighted and are a pleasure to look at. In the Christmas markets, you get everything you can imagine for Christmas. You can get delicious Christmas themed cookies, ginger breads, wonderful warm hand made gifts such as knitted socks, caps etc, you can get wooden toys and hand crafted gift to give to your loved ones. Markets are full of buzz and people enjoy the various delicacies. On 24th, the main Christmas Dinner takes place, they only eat after the 1st star comes out. A lavish dinner is laid out with Carp being the main dish. After their dinner feast, they go to their beautifully decorated and lighted Christmas tree. They sit as a family, sing carols and open presents. Some people stay up till mid-night and attend mass to celebrate the re-birth of Jesus.

In Germany, Christmas involves candles, a Christmas tree, baking Christmas biscuits and buying presents. In all German houses, there has to be at least one real Christmas Tree. For many people, 24th December, Christmas Eve, is divided into a hectic morning and a festive evening. When Christmas Eve falls on a working day, the shops are open until noon and the last minute shoppers keep them busy.. In the evening, the family gathers around and enjoy music together. From 11th to 24th the German people fast where they do not eat meat but only eat simple food like carp(fish) or potato salad and red cabbage.

The Dresden Christmas Market is one of the most lively markets in Germany. People from the neighboring countries also do not miss the opportunity of visiting it. Not only known for it's Christmas spirit, it is also famous for lace work, most of the stalls specialize in lace work, hand crafted decorations and much more!!! Everything seems inspired from the olden times.

Like in all parts of Europe, in Austria on the Advent Sunday, people decorate twigs, light a candle and sing a carol or two. Each Austrian City shows up with amazing, spirit raising market. The best and main Christmas market takes place in the capital city Vienna(Wien). They sell food like gingerbread houses and many more exciting things like Christmas gifts and decorations. All the cities  have a large, lighted Christmas tree in their Town Square. The Christmas starts around 4p.m on Christmas Eve in Austria.. They bring in their Christmas tree and decorate it on 24th not before that. Every year(except this one) Vienna has a musical concert, where they sing Christmas Carols

In India, Christmas is not widely celebrated like Diwali (do check out my Diwali blog too- Click here πŸ˜‚ πŸ˜‚).But as we Indians are very lively people, many of us light up our houses for Christmas and do decorate our small Christmas trees too. In India, people decorate their tree, give each other gifts, enjoy a lavish dinner and attend mass in the Church.
